Plenty of people are asking me what are expenses when you go for long time travel. This mainly depends on what for you are spending your money, what comfort you need and most importantly where do you go. For example in case you do all sightseeing with travel agencies and guides than your cost will significantly rise. On the other hand to do all by yourself take more time, sometime you will struggle with different things, but for sure at the end you will have different experience (I would say more interesting) and your trip will be cheaper.
In general all costs like is transportation, accommodation, entrance fees to the sights you visit or food is possible to maintain around 25 USD per day. At least that was what cost me in average day of my “Around the world trip”. Actually this are expenses I have on most of my trips. No matter if they were short or long.
How to maintain sustainable cost of your trip?
Probably the trickiest think are first days after you leave your home. You have feeling how all is cheap and that you can afford basically everything. In some way you are right. The only question is for how long you plan travel. Therefore how long you can afford this approach. I did same at the beginning of my trip and end up spending 80 USD a day what is for countries I was traveling in far too much.
At the end I set up my daily budget for 20 USD per day. This helped me to maintain my cost in reasonable level. Of course someday I have spent 80 USD per day or even more, but than other days I spent only 5 USD.
What I am trying to say is “Don’t write down every cent you spend and what for you used your money”. That is useless. For you as well like for anybody who would try to use this expenses as guide for their trip. Prices are changing too fast to have such a detailed info. Do you want to know how much the trip cost you? Perfect I am same, but more accurate approach is keeping your cost overview on average bases. That means have cost overview by Country or Month. From that you can anytime calculate your daily cost.
