Visiting Kelong was interesting experience. Coming from Singapore to such a place without internet, phone connection and cars. To be surrounded only by the sea was really nice and “quite” experience.
What is Kelong? Well Kelong is an offshore platform built predominantly with wood. Kelongs can be found in waters off Malaysia, the Philippines and Indonesia (only a handful remain around Singapore due to rapid urbanisation). Kelongs are generally built by fishermen primarily for fishing purposes. Although larger structures can also function as dwellings for them and their families. Kelong I have visited was already mainly used as “Hotel”, but still nice to sleep on the sea…
